Greenwin Cares is launching an exciting new research initiative in collaboration with Seneca Polytechnic and Just Vertical, Vertical Farming Growing Local Food Security and Community Connection. The project explores how vertical farming and hydroponic grow walls can strengthen local food security, support mental health and wellness, and build stronger connections.
Access to fresh, nutritious food can be limited in both urban and northern communities. Vertical farming and hydroponic systems offer an innovative solution—they allow communities to grow healthy fruits and vegetables in compact spaces while fostering engagement and resilience.
The project, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) College and Community Social Innovation Fund, which supports initiatives that bring social innovation and applied research together to create tangible community impact.
Focusing on both urban and northern communities, the study will examine how vertical and hydroponic growing systems can:
- Improve food security by increasing access to fresh, nutritious produce
- Support mental health and wellness through community engagement and farming
- Strengthen social connections and foster a sense of belonging
Beyond providing fresh food, the project aims to encourage learning and active participation in the community, create shared spaces for connection and collaboration, and promote sustainable and innovative practices across neighbourhoods.
Greenwin Cares and Seneca Polytechnic will share insights and updates as the project develops. The goal is to identify how these growing systems can be implemented more widely to cultivate healthier, more resilient, and connected communities across Canada.
Together, we’re planting the seeds for a future where every community can thrive with greater food security, wellness, and connection.
