Halloween is a time for children to dress up, collect treats and enjoy the excitement of trick-or-treating. However, for children with disabilities, traditional Halloween activities can sometimes present challenges, from navigating stairs to experiencing sensory overload.

Greenwin Cares was proud to take part in Halloween on Erskine on October 31, alongside Treat Accessibly, an initiative dedicated to making Halloween more inclusive and accessible for every child.

MAKING HALLOWEEN ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE

Treat Accessibly encourages homeowners to create accessible trick-or-treating spaces by setting up a treat station in an easily accessible location and displaying a free lawn sign to welcome families. These simple adjustments help remove barriers and allow children with disabilities to enjoy Halloween alongside their peers.

The initiative also promotes sensory-friendly experiences and allergy-safe treats, helping ensure every child can take part in the festivities.

ADDING A LITTLE SWEETNESS TO THE CELEBRATION

Lily W., Director, Greenwin Cares and Melissa G., Community Project Specialist, Greenwin Cares joined the celebrations by setting up a cotton candy machine outside Issac Hall's home and handing out sweet treats to children throughout the neighbourhood.

A special thank you to Jenn G., VP, Affordable Housing & Social Impact, Greenwin, for connecting Greenwin Cares with this wonderful initiative and to Issac H. for creating an accessible trick-or-treating space and welcoming our team.

A LITTLE KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY

Lily also shared a heartwarming story about a young girl who visits her home every Halloween to enjoy her candy slide, a tradition that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, she told her about Treat Accessibly and a participating street nearby on Keewatin. She decided to visit and, at the end of the evening, returned with a big smile and a warm hug to thank her for sharing the experience with her.

It was a beautiful reminder of how a simple conversation can introduce someone to new experiences and make a meaningful difference.

At Greenwin Cares, we are proud to support initiatives like Treat Accessibly that bring communities together and help make special moments accessible to everyone.
