Make sure your vents are open and clean. This is something that many people don't do. They will put on the air conditioning or the heat, not realizing that the vents are closed and not working properly. Having all vents open will also increase the air circulation flow in your home and make your costs more manageable.

Laundry. Using heat in your laundry cycles only when it is necessary can save energy and costs. In addition, be mindful of not overfilling the machine. Costs are also reduced after peak hours, so doing your laundry in the evening is always a good call! The same advice works for your dishwasher.

Turn off electronic devices. While most electronic devices and appliances account for very little of your total energy bills and use, some devices have a larger impact than others. Particularly, a desktop computer that is always left on, video game consoles, electric kettles and televisions are items you will want to make an effort of turning off when not in use. Most households in today's world have several of these devices and it can be inconvenient to turn them all off individually. A quick solution is to use a power bar for several electronics and turn off the power bar itself.

Lighting. Turning off lights when you are not using them is a simple way to save energy and money. However, a new trend called "task lighting" might save even more. Rather than lighting an entire room when you are working in one small area, use a lamp or small light for the specific task at hand. In addition, changing all of your light bulbs to Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL) will make a difference, as they use 75% less energy than standard light bulbs.

Keeping warm in winter. Using curtains and shades for windows will help keep the heat inside during winter months and reduce your overall heating needs. Use the programmable options on your thermostat to set warmer temperatures when you are home and cooler temperatures for when you are at work. This way, you are not heating (or cooling, in the summer) an empty house.

Shower. While everyone loves a nice, relaxing bath, they are more than double the cost of a shower.
