#MyGreenwinLife is a series highlighting individual members of the Greenwin team by exploring their unique journeys, which have led them to become valued members of our company. Through the inspiring stories, memories and experiences of our people, we hope to celebrate the connection and sense of community that is the backbone of our company.

Today we would like to share the story of Lily, Director, Greenwin Cares:

I found good in the world, and a second family, at Greenwin.

Being out in the community – meeting our residents, collaborating with local business owners, creating programs at our sites – makes me happy. All of the interactions are a reminder that there's good in the world and I feel fortunate to contribute in some small way. How many people get to say that they're doing meaningful work and loving it and getting paid for it?

I've had the opportunity to work with so many influential, incredible people. The neighbourhood officers at 31 Division top my list. They're down to earth and just want to help. They even did door-knocking for our door-to-door Covid-19 vaccine clinic. Mayor John Tory is another person who has supported all of our programs with the San Romanoway Revitalization Association and The Believe to Achieve Organization. He's someone who you can go to with anything.

Working with a family business like Greenwin is a completely unique experience. The owners – Kevin, Cary and Eric ("The Boys") – are just a phone call or text away; doors are always open. Since I started back in 1997, I've always felt supported and valued. When my son was having febrile seizures, The Boys were the first to say, "Family first". As a working mom of two, there's nothing more important than that. In all of my years with Greenwin, I've never missed one of my kids' engagements.

That value for family started with our late co-founder, Harold Green. He hired me, out of a print shop at the Yonge Eglinton Centre, as a receptionist. I eventually became an assistant to the development team. When Harold found out that I had enrolled for college but didn't go, he helped me register for a Bachelor's Degree in Commerce. He insisted on reviewing all of my assignments before I submitted them and always said, "I don't know why we pay you!" He was a perfectionist. He would always find something to correct.

Every day, he brought bagel sandwiches into the office: scooped out poppy-seed twister, butter, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, salt and pepper. He'd always save one for me; every Friday, I got a challah. People always told me stories about how intimidating Harold was. To me, he was a teddy bear. I called him "Boss".

Over the years, I've made lifelong friends at Greenwin. Best friends, really. And they're all still with the company, some since I started back in 1997. That says a lot.
