Job Description:

Summary: The Senior Payroll Administrator will be responsible for the management, preparation and transmission of designated (hourly and salaried) weekly, bi-weekly and semi-monthly payrolls. Other key responsibilities include: calculation and disbursement of wages, deductions, overtime payments, commission earnings and payroll taxes, GL Account Reconciliation, labour cost payroll and preparation of payroll budgets.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the preparation and distribution of the organization's (union and non-unionized) hourly and salaried employees for multiple payroll groups in Ontario and Quebec
  • Liaise with internal and external departments, clients, employees, etc. in the resolution of payroll issues and inquiries thoroughly and in a professional manner
  • Process withholdings of all legally required deductions (Federal, Provincial, CPP, EI, WSIB, EHT, etc.)
  • Manage the preparation and annual filing of required reports and/or payments to government agencies, insurance carriers, employees, etc. including all legally required tax filings
  • Responsible for accurate calculations and withholdings of payroll deductions for employee contributions to life and health insurance, multiple union pension and welfare payments 
  • Participate in research and implementation of any new payroll systems, reports or enhancements to improve payroll department efficiencies
  • Recommend changes in methods or procedures to improve the efficiency of the payroll function
  • Produce and analyze periodic and special reports on payroll matters
  • Special payroll and finance projects as required and assigned


  • Minimum 7+ years payroll experience (transmission of multiple payrolls, 500+ employees and multiple jurisdictions preferred)
  • PCP designation an asset plus working towards the Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) certification)
  • Ceridian Dayforce experience an asset (knowledge of payroll systems required)
  • Knowledge of Unions preferred with solid understanding of Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Excellent working knowledge of advanced Excel
  • Technically competent and confident learning and training on new software and/or payroll systems
  • Exceptional customer service and resolution skills for internal and external clients
  • Strong and proven analytical skills
  • Consistent and reliable – able to regularly meet and exceed payroll deadlines and schedules
  • A trusted and respected payroll professional, always maintaining confidentiality and privacy – abiding by Code of Conduct and Payroll Standards of Conduct
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment while ensuring excellent attention to detail
