#MyGreenwinLife is a series that highlights individual members of the Greenwin team by exploring their unique journeys, which have led them to become valued members of our company. Through the inspiring stories, memories and experiences of our people, we celebrate the connection and sense of community that is the backbone of our organization.

Today we would like to share the story of Derek Brovold, Director, Residential Operations:

I started my journey with Greenwin in 2013 as a Senior Property Manager and I was promoted to Director, Residential Operations in 2017. Before my career with Greenwin, I was in a waiting in line to enter the ballroom at the FRPO Gala, and I happened be waiting beside Greenwin’s President & CEO, Kevin Green.  I had never spoken to him, but being in the industry, I knew who he was. I decided to introduce myself and I was blown away by the way he was so engaged in the conversation. It may have been due to the fact that most of what we spoke about was football (he's a Vikings fan and I'm a Bears fan, so we're supposed to hate each other), but I left the conversation with even more respect for Kevin than I already had, simply based on his reputation.

On a personal note, Greenwin has always been respectful of work-life balance, making balancing my career and being a parent manageable. I'm happily married and my children enjoy my company, even as teenagers – so that really says something. What I respect the most is the fact that there are multiple generations of the Green family contributing to Greenwin's success. I am the son of an entrepreneur, and although my father respected my decision not to work in the family business, I'm sure there is a part of him that would have wanted that.

Being on the operations side of the business, I am actively involved with many residents. Many of the buildings in my portfolio have been with me for over 10 years, and most residents know me by name when I visit. We have worked very hard to not only provide the best living conditions, but also develop community. Most buildings have annual events like barbeques, holiday parties, etc., and I have always tried to do my part to make the events memorable. We often have prize giveaways, contests, or trivia. I can usually be found behind the barbeque during our summer events, making sure that I am personally connecting with the residents in the community.

On the topic of community, Greenwin’s culture of giving back sets us aside from other property management companies. From resident barbeques and other events, to volunteering at local community centres or agencies, Greenwin sets the standard.

The most joyful part of my job is being a part of a dynamic team. I work with a very reliable team, from the site level and up. This past November, I attended the FRPO MAC Awards for the first time in a number of years. I was blown away by the fact that Greenwin had 3 full tables of team members representing the company. It’s so important to celebrate the successes of our hard work, and it was incredible to see so many people doing so, in person.

When it comes to my colleagues, I want to give a special shout out to Helene Tissplat. I think of her as the best of an amazing group. I don't think I know anyone that works harder, and just always seems to know what her buildings need, like she does. She's tough, but fair, and respected by everyone I know, from contractors to colleagues.

Another aspect of my job that brings me joy is the clients (Non-Profit Boards of Directors). I have worked with many of our clients for over 10 years, and over this time we have developed a true partnership. I work with great confidence knowing that I have the support of our clients, and we have done so much to better the buildings and communities in the Non-Profit portfolio.

When it comes to the accomplishments that I’m most proud of, I will have to group a few together. I spent a good chunk of time putting together applications for Government funding for capital projects at buildings with very modest budgets. Any success would have a massive impact on the buildings. I was able to secure over $2M in funding for very necessary capital repairs for four locations across the GTA. The funding relieved huge budgetary burdens, and freed up funds to undertake other, less important (but still very necessary) projects.
